A little over three months ago, The Sassenach Files podcast started off as the punch line of a joke in an IM conversation I was having with a young woman I met through an Outlander Fan Page on Facebook. I had newly come to the Outlander fandom, after a visit to Scotland the previous year, and was delighted to find someone my own age with whom I could gush over my newfound obsession! She had been posting a series of absolutely hilarious play by plays while reading Outlander for the first time, and I instantly knew we shared not just a love for the series, but a twisted sense of humor and a passionate disagreement over who is better: Jamie or Roger–it’s Jamie by the way. Turns out the girl’s name was Rebecca, and the rest is history…sort of.
Many a late night was spent brainstorming just how we were going to make this work. Forming a podcast based on a show that has already been out for five seasons is a steep slope, and we weren’t sure we were prepared to climb it. We barely knew each other, we lived on completely different sides of the country, and our budget for this extravaganza was a whopping $0–not to mention the fact that neither of us are tech savvy, and we had no idea where to even start. But, where there’s a will there’s a way, and the one thing we did have was a passion for Outlander. So that would have to be enough, and damn the torpedoes.
The idea of a blog came to me just after our fourth episode, “The One With All The Religion and Folklore”, dropped. Our show was already doing better than we ever anticipated, and while Rebecca and I love our weekly recording sessions, we had openly admitted to each other that we wanted to grow The Sassenach Files into something where we could each have our own individual platforms to speak as well.
So here we are, a month later, and I’m writing the first of what I hope will be many, many blog posts. The Outlander Universe reaches far and wide with enough content to keep us all entertained for a good while yet. My goal with this blog is to not only share my love for the series, but to expand my knowledge of Outlander, and share that knowledge with all of you! I plan to cover a variety of topics from thoughts on my favorite book passages, to the real historical events behind the series, and even some Outlander inspired trips I am planning to take — including another trip to our beloved Scotland.
We are in the midst of what will probably be the longest Droughtlander in the history of the show, and I want to do my part to make it bearable for all of us. Check back weekly to see what we have been up to. We are doing our best to create new episodes for all of you, and I plan to have regular blog content published as well. Thanks so much for coming on this crazy ride with us. I hope you are having as much fun listening as we are creating!
Until next time Obsassenachs, Cheers!
